Getting up just after 4 am each morning for training. Actually, not for training, but simply to stand outside in the -55 degree Regina winter air, standing at attention, waiting to be called into the gymnasium...just to stand at attention AGAIN!
This is what I did day after day, during my training in Saskatchewan in order to become a Police Officer. There were days that I couldn't feel my fingers or toes by the time we finished standing still waiting to be released for breakfast. However, I did learn discipline at a new level during my 6 months of training. And I also learned another valuable lesson:
In order to Lead, you must be willing to Follow First.
Before you can be at the head of the pack, before you can lead, you must first learn to be a good follower. You must first learn to take direction, before you give it. In speaking, adopting this lesson is essential. When you are learning the art of public speaking, taking direction in the form of reading, learning from others, and coaching is vital. There is not a single speaker whose name you know that has not learned from someone else. There is not one whose lessons you follow that has not humbled themselves to learn lessons from others first. Every great speaker invests in themselves before they give to others.
After 6 months of training, following and learning (not to mention prep steps galore before I even got accepted), I was deemed “ready” to police the streets of Canada. And on my first day on the job...I was given ANOTHER coach for yet another 6 months to learn from. On top of that, any veteran police officer will tell you that there are courses upon courses to take for their entire career that they need to stay relevant in their career.
Speaking is no different. After thousands of hours of research, pages read and dollars invested, I can proudly look out to any crowd that I speak in front of and loudly declare....
I have so much yet to learn.
Invest to be the Best...you.
